Past paper intervention

Dear Parent PAST PAPER INTERVENTION

9 September 2014 The challenge is to improve the marks of all of our learners with your assistance. We have proven that we can improve Grade 12 learner’s marks by getting them to complete past papers. We are now extending this to the Grade 8 – 11’s, with the approval of our I.D.S.O, Mr S Thomas.

From Monday 8 September class time will be reduced to 45 minutes per period to allow for an hour each morning in which learners will do past examination papers. Learners will not do past papers on a Friday while Cycle Tests are still being written, i.e. during the Third Term. H.O.D’s will make sure that the paper to be answered is on the Portal, and that the learner’s subject teachers have told their classes which paper to answer. Parents must ensure that their child has a fully charged tablet at school.

Most past examination papers in the FET phase are 2 – 3 hours long. Papers in the GET phase may be shorter. Learners will have an hour at school to start doing the exam paper, and must complete the remainder of the paper after school at home for the next day. Learners can also make use of substitution periods to complete past papers given for completion as homework.

The Registration Teacher must sign the paper on which the learner is answering the past paper. This is necessary to indicate that the teacher has checked that the learner was busy doing the paper in their class. The child’s parent must sign the paper to indicate that they have checked that their son/daughter is completing the paper for homework. The subject teacher must sign the paper to indicate that they have checked that the learner has attempted the paper. There should be THREE signatures on the answers of each exam paper submitted.

The Register Teacher is to collect the exam papers answered by each learner at the end of each round. The Register Teacher is to record on a class list how many papers each learner has submitted for the round. The papers collected must be placed in a plastic sleeve (one sleeve per learner per round), and kept by the Register Teacher.

The number of papers a Grade 10/11 learner is required to submit is as follows: SEVEN(7) Maths, SIX(6) English, FIVE(5) Afrikaans, FOUR(4) Choice 1, 2 & 3, i.e. 30 papers.

Up until the ANA examinations are written, the Grade 9’s will spend the whole day doing either Mathematics or English (See table below). The number of papers a Grade 9 learner is required to submit is as follows: FOUR(4) Afrikaans, THREE(3) EMS, English, HSS, NS & Technology, TWO (2) Maths and ONE(1) AC, i.e. 22 papers. The number of papers a Grade 8 learner is required to submit is as follows: FOUR(4) EMS, English, HSS, Maths, NS & Technology and THREE(3) Afrikaans and AC, i.e. 30 papers.

Subject teachers must telephone the parents of weak learners (below 50%) who do not submit or complete exam papers. The subject teacher will direct the learners to a memorandum on the portal, or go over the paper with their class, if required. NB. Each FET Phase learner has three subjects he/she chose in addition to Maths, English & Afrikaans.

The learner can choose which they do as ‘Choice 1’, ‘Choice 2’ and ‘Choice 3’. They have, however, to ensure that they hand in a paper in each of their ‘Choice Subjects’ in each ‘round’. Teachers must please note that they need to put more than one paper per subject and grade on the Portal, as there is more than one ‘round’.

School will start as per code of conduct at 7:45

 13 May 2015

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Guardians

Mrs Peens and her staff would sincerely like to thank the 90% of the Parent body for ensuring that their learners were at School on time by 07h30 so that teaching could start in the classrooms. The reason for this, as you remember was that Sunward Park High School made up the time missed when the major Unions went on strike for a day.

The School Times will be reverting back to normal as per the Code of Conduct as from Monday 18 May 2015. Please take note of the following times:

▪The arrival gate will be closed at 07h40 (twenty minutes to eight) ▪Learners proceed directly to class teaching will start at 07h45 (fifteen minutes to eight)
▪Staff will be in their classrooms from 07h30 in the morning to set up their teaching equipment for the first lesson.
▪Educators will line up learners in front of their classes from 07h45.

As per the instructions of the Department of Education Learners and Educators should arrive 15 minutes before school starting times. The two most common reasons for late coming are:

 1. I live too far
 2. The taxis are late

The question that a person would have to answer is should a child not enroll at a school closer to home or catch an earlier taxi?

Learners that arrive after 07h40 must be dropped off at the front entrance to the School where they will be de-merited for late coming. Late comers will not disrupt teaching during the first period; they will assist staff under supervision to pick up the litter in and around the school.

The TIMES for a school day:

 Period 1 7.45 8.40
 Period 2 8.40 9.35
 Period 3 9.35 10.30

 Registration 10.30 10.45
 Break 10.45 11.15

 Period 4 11.15 12.10
 Period 5 12.10 13.05
 Period 6 13.05 14.00

We trust that these times will be adhered to as we want to strengthen the Triangular Partnership between the Parent Learner School. Do ensure your child is at school on time so that he/she does not lose any valuable teaching time.

 13 May 2015

Dear Parents / Educators / Learners

Saturday classes have become a necessity at SPHS for two reasons:

   1. Achieving excellence.
   2. Addressing poor performance.

All learners must be dropped off at the pick-up and drop-off zone that is used during the week. The gate will be open from 08h00 08h30. Classes will start at 08h30 until 12h00. The gates will be opened at 12h00 and locked at 12h30. Learners will wait inside the school property for their transport. Only learners that needs to catch a taxi at Pick n Pay or are in walking distance from their homes, will be allowed to leave the property.

The reason for taking these measures is that we do not want to be in confrontation with the neighbours due to unruly and noisy behavior of our learners. Can you please ensure that the person that fetches your child is a responsible adult as we have problems with irresponsible and immature drivers of vehicles spinning their cars and endangering the safety of other learners in an attempt to show off.

We will have the following responsible staff on duty:

   1. One person from the Senior Executive Principal and/or Deputies.
   2. One HOD.
   3. Educators teaching.
   4. The person responsible for lock up.

 Yours faithfully
 ASH PEENS Principal
